President of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS), Senator Norman Grant, is hailing the resilience of Trelawny’s farmers, noting that despite drought they produced over 95,000 metric tonnes of produce last year, contributing 15.5 per cent of the country’s domestic crop production.
He said the parish is ranked third in domestic production behind Manchester and St. Elizabeth.
“Let me celebrate the efforts of the farmers in Trelawny. They accounted for 95,742 metric tonnes of the 614,000 metric tonnes of produce in (2014),” Senator Grant said.
He was speaking on Wednesday (February 18) at the 2015 Hague Agricultural and Livestock Show in Falmouth.
Senator Grant said the local agricultural sector is “once again booming” after experiencing severe drought during the third quarter of 2014.
He said the grand display of agricultural produce at the Hague show, is a clear demonstration that agriculture has recovered “and is back to stay to lead a process of economic development and food security for Jamaica”.
