Press Release

TRELAWNY MUNICIPAL CORPORATION REMINDS PUBLIC OF IMPORTANCE
OF DEVELOPMENT APPROVAL COMPLIANCE

The Trelawny Municipal Corporation is urging the public to adhere to the development approval process to ensure safe and orderly growth across the parish. Under the Building Act, no construction should be carried out without first obtaining a building permit, as failure to comply may result in severe penalties, including fines of up to $1,500,000.00 under Section 44(7) and $2,500,000.00 under Section 46(5) of the Act.
A building permit is not just a legal requirement; it is a critical step toward responsible development. The permit process ensures that all structures meet national safety standards, protecting homeowners, businesses, and the wider community from potential hazards. It also guarantees that new developments align with zoning regulations, environmental considerations, and infrastructure needs—creating a harmonious and well-planned Trelawny. The public is further reminded that road reservations are designated for future infrastructure development and public access. Construction within these areas is restricted to prevent encroachments that could hinder transportation expansion and urban planning efforts.

As the steward of local development, the Trelawny Municipal Corporation is committed to supporting individuals and businesses in navigating the approval process. We recognize that development is key to economic growth, housing solutions, and community enhancement. However, this progress must be structured and safe, ensuring that future generations inherit a well-regulated and thriving parish.
We encourage all developers, homeowners, and contractors to consult with the Corporation before commencing any construction to avoid costly fines and legal complications. Let us work together to foster a progressive, safe, and sustainable Trelawny where development is carried out responsibly and lawfully.
